I’m looking for a tutor to help me explore different areas of game development to find a possible new career direction.  I used to work at Pixar, so I have a good handle on many of the technical concepts, but not the specifics of modern tools, or the differences of game development vs 3D animation for film.

I have two goals:

1) rapidly build a prototype game — touch on all the basic areas of game development. I’m looking for breadth, not depth right now.

2) real world wisdom about the unfilled needs currently in the game industry that might make a good career.

My background: I started as a programmer, writing drawing programs as a teen, then renderers in college.  At Pixar, I started as a programmer, then crowds tech (Bug’s Life), and into the art side with modeling tech and lighting tech (Toy Story 2 and the short film For the Birds).

Then I took a 25 year break.

Think of me as a World War I pilot who is learning how to fly a modern jet — some things I may understand better than you, but most of the time, I’ll look like a rookie.

The games I enjoy are photoreal narrative/character driven games — in this new media for storytelling. These games seem to face many of the same problems we had faced at Pixar, just at 120fps rather than 12 hours/frame. (!!)  I’m drawn to Unreal Engine and believe I’d rather work at the high end of quality, but I’m not closed minded if there’s more work out there for other engines.

I’d love to hear real "war stories" from an experienced game dev who’s worked as a freelancer and also in larger companies, to understand better what actual work needs exist out there.  I actually listen to good advice from seasoned experience.  I’m not looking to be a rockstar anymore.  I’m looking to get ‘er done.

Let’s see if we are a good match.

Hourly Range: $25.00-$75.00
