European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has sharply criticised U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to impose new tariffs on European allies amid his renewed push to take control of Greenland. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, von der Leyen called the proposed 10% tariffs on imports from eight European countries “a mistake,” especially between “longstanding allies.” She also questioned Trump’s reliability, reminding audiences that the EU and the U.S. reached a trade deal last July. “A deal is a deal,” she said, stressing that trust and credibility are essential for stable international relations. While warning against a downward spiral in transatlantic ties, von der Leyen made it clear that the EU would respond firmly if provoked — with a reaction that would be “unflinching, united and proportional.” Trump, meanwhile, doubled down on his ambition to control Greenland, saying there was “no going back,” further escalating tensions between Washington and Europe.
