In this episode of HT Explained, Shashank Mattoo dives into the story of Matthew VanDyke, the US national arrested by the NIA in Kolkata a few weeks ago for allegedly training ethnic militias in Myanmar that have ties to armed groups in India. We look at VanDyke and his organisation – Sons of Liberty International – and its operations in Ukraine, Iraq and now perhaps Myanmar. HT also spoke to people who knew VanDyke and could explain his motivations. HT also looks at his ties to the US government and the possibility of foreign espionage in the Northeast.
