A powerful car bomb in southern Moscow has killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff Operational Training Directorate, in what investigators are treating as a targeted assassination. Russia’s Investigative Committee says an explosive device was planted under his vehicle and detonated on Yasenevaya Street as he got into or began driving the car in the courtyard of a residential building; Sarvarov suffered multiple injuries and later died in hospital, and a murder case has been opened.
