Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has strongly criticised the Trump administration following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. Walz called the situation an “unholy mess” and accused federal authorities of running a smear campaign against a U.S. citizen with no criminal record. He is demanding that federal agents be withdrawn from the state and that Minnesota lead the investigation. The Department of Homeland Security, however, says the shooting was self-defence. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stated that Border Patrol agents were confronted by an armed suspect who “intended to inflict maximum damage.” Federal officials also described violent unrest at the scene, while local leaders and eyewitness videos have raised questions about what Pretti was holding during the confrontation.
