U.S. after implementing a steep 50% tariff on Indian goods, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has revealed that the move wasn’t solely about India’s Russian oil imports. In an interview with Fox Business, Bessent cited India’s “long-drawn” trade talks and unfulfilled expectations as key reasons for the punitive action. The U.S. has also raised concerns over India’s trade surplus and delays in finalising a bilateral deal. Despite this, sources say India is keeping channels open for negotiations but remains firm on protecting its agricultural and MSME sectors. Prime Minister Modi has reiterated that India won’t compromise its farmers’ interests.
