Tensions are rising between Iran-linked militias and NATO forces after an Iraqi group, Ashab al-Kahf, warned that French interests in the region are now “under targeting fire” following the arrival of a French aircraft carrier. The threat came as France confirmed that a soldier was killed and several troops were wounded in a drone attack near Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan during a training mission. The strike marks the first French military death since the Middle East conflict escalated on February 28. With European bases in Iraq, Cyprus and elsewhere increasingly targeted, NATO countries appear to be getting drawn deeper into the widening Iran-linked proxy war.
