A politically motivated attack has left Minnesota reeling after former State House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed in their Brooklyn Park home by a suspect impersonating a police officer. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also targeted and wounded in a separate, coordinated shooting at their Champlin residence. Governor Tim Walz condemned the shootings as a “politically motivated assassination” and activated the State Emergency Operations Center, while all state lawmakers have been placed under protective custody.
