In a major development nearly three years after the tragic death of Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula, the City of Seattle has agreed to a ₹262-crore settlement with her family in a wrongful death lawsuit. Kandula, a 23-year-old master’s student at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus, was fatally struck in January 2023 by a speeding police vehicle driven by Officer Kevin Dave, who was reportedly responding to an emergency call. Dashcam footage showed the devastating impact, which threw her more than 100 feet. The case drew international attention and outrage, especially after bodycam audio surfaced of another officer making insensitive remarks about Kandula’s life. While prosecutors declined to pursue felony charges, the officer involved was later cited for negligent driving and dismissed from service.
