Iran has reportedly fired two ballistic missiles toward the Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean, marking one of the most far-reaching moves of the war so far. The Wall Street Journal, cited by Reuters and other outlets, reported that neither missile hit the joint U.S.-UK base: one failed in flight, while a U.S. warship fired an SM-3 interceptor at the other, though it remains unclear whether the interceptor caused the second missile to fail. The attempted strike is significant because Diego Garcia is about 4,000 km from Iran, well beyond the roughly 2,000 km range Tehran has long publicly associated with much of its ballistic missile arsenal. Publicly cited estimates for missiles such as the Sejjil, Emad, Ghadr and Khorramshahr generally place them in the 1,300 to 2,000 km category, though some analyses have long suggested Iran may be working on systems with greater reach.
