Israel claimed that top Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohammad Pakpour was killed in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. Pakpour, who reportedly led the I.R.G.C. for about 260 days after the killing of Hossein Salami, was considered among the most powerful figures in Iran and had recently warned Israel and the U.S. to “avoid miscalculation,” saying Tehran was “more ready than ever.” Following the strikes, Iran launched missile attacks on U.S. bases across the Gulf and targeted northern Israel. Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump vowed sustained action.
