EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius has called Europe a “sleeping giant” on defence, urging the bloc to wake up and act as a unified military power rather than 27 fragmented forces. Pointing to lessons from Ukraine, Kubilius stressed that simply increasing defence spending is not enough. Instead, Europe must focus on real capabilities, deeper military integration, and building a strong, coordinated European defence industry to ensure long-term security and readiness.
