Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced the capture in Spain of Wilmer Chavarría Barre, alias ‘Pipo’, the leader of one of Ecuador’s largest gangs, which is linked to the Mexican drug cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación. Noboa described Chavarría as “the most valuable target on the list of criminals who cause so much harm to us and to the entire region”, and said his capture was made possible through cooperation with Spain and the United States. The president made the announcement shortly after voting in a referendum he called for Ecuadorians to decide whether to establish a Constituent Assembly and welcome foreign military bases, which he says will serve to combat organised crime.
