A violent scuffle broke out between Israeli police and ultra-orthodox Jews in Jerusalem on August 21. The ultra-Orthodox Jews were protesting against the conscription of religious students into the Israel Defence Forces. This comes after Israel’s Supreme Court ruled in June that there was no legal ground for conscription exemptions for the religious community. Remember, the ultra-orthodox Jewish community had been exempt from military service since the foundation of the state in 1948.
