Howdy! I am a seasoned software engineer looking for one or more up-and-coming part/full time folks to assist me on various projects I’ve got in the works. I’ve been in the industry for about 8 years professionally (including a few stints doing freelance here on upwork) and currently work full time at Tesla as a Staff Distributed Systems Engineer for their Vision Automation team.

Ideal candidates will be experienced and possess good technical chops, but also be eager to learn new things (and teach me/others new things as well!). I’ve got quite a bit of experience mentoring those in the early stages of their careers and enjoy doing so, so I don’t expect this to be a fully one-sided transaction as a lot of other jobs on here usually are.

These projects are mostly side projects/things I’ve gotten pulled into and would love to devote more time to, but I only have so many hours in the day and my full time job is very demanding. The projects vary quite a bit in their complexity, maturity, and my desired end state for them ranging from things that are not much more than an idea or concept to projects that are already supporting full time businesses. Specific projects will be matched with folks depending on their personal strengths and desires.

Most of the projects are based in the Python/Django/Postgres/VanillaJS/jQuery/Bootstrap stack of technologies/frameworks, however there are some that have the stray bit of MySQL, Linux admin, Flutter, RasberryPi, etc. depending on what they are for and how old they are.

Some examples of the types of projects you could be working on include:
– An E-commerce management platform that includes order fulfilment and rudimentary manufacturing/inventory tracking
– A couple mostly informational websites
– A video streaming and sharing platform
– A credit card rewards optimizer app
– An AI-based social media manager
– A basic accounting webapp
– Management software for a custom t-shirt printing company
– Other mobile-based apps

The ideal candidate will be well versed in Django, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as almost all projects include these technologies at some level. As mentioned above, the projects all have varying needs of these and other technologies and I fully expect to pair people with the project(s) that match their own strengths and desires, so even if you’re not super strong in one of those areas or some of the other technologies listed, I’m sure there’s a place you can fit if you’re okay doing a bit of on-the-job learning.

I am still in the process of figuring out to take these projects beyond just me and exactly how this will go with recruiting freelancers to assist. I expect we’ll follow what are effectively industry standard development practices of using Jira to track work statuses, Git branches and code reviews to review code prior to merging/deployment, etc. Any previous experience with scrum practices/Jira/etc. is beneficial, however not required.

As you can probably expect, I anticipate these engagements being fairly open ended and largely tailored to each person’s individual strengths (depending on how the relationship and projects go, they could also turn into full-time positions for one or more of these projects). This means I don’t have specific requirements around working hours, how many hours per week get worked, etc. The only thing I ask is that if you commit to getting something done by a time, you make every reasonable effort to make that happen. Also, as I’m based in the US Central time zone (-5/6 GMT) and work during the day, I expect any meetings or other things that cannot happen async would generally be scheduled between 6-11pm -5/6GMT; I’m open to anyone in any geographies that could be available during these times at least once a week or so (ideally we’ll have weekly brief planning/review meetings with everyone).

Sound interesting to you? Awesome! Along with a short bio about yourself/your background please also send a short coding example of some production-ready (i.e. tested!) Django code (a model with some custom functions, a view/API view, etc. would be ideal) along with a test suite for whatever it does and your favorite software engineering related book. Thanks!
