Brazil on Saturday formally recognised Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as interim president following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a U.S. military operation in Caracas. Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said Venezuelan law requires the vice president to assume leadership in the president’s absence, a position also upheld by Venezuela’s Supreme Court. Brasília is considering an emergency CELAC meeting to address the U.S. action, while noting that Brazil’s border with Venezuela remains calm and open. Maduro and Flores were transferred to New York, where they are being held on drug trafficking charges.
