India has paid tribute to Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, following her death on December 30. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Zia’s son and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in Dhaka, delivering a personal message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Millions gathered on Dhaka’s streets to pay their final respects to the former leader. Khaleda Zia served as Bangladesh’s prime minister from 1991 to 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006. A longtime rival of Sheikh Hasina, she had been battling multiple health issues, including liver cirrhosis and heart complications, according to doctors.
