Mexico has launched a sweeping security crackdown in Michoacan after the public assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo triggered national outrage. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the Michoacan Plan for Peace and Justice, deploying more than 10,500 army, air force, and National Guard personnel to dismantle criminal groups, combat extortion, and destroy drug labs and training camps. The plan includes 57 billion pesos (USD 3.1 billion) in investment across policing, justice, welfare, agriculture, and infrastructure. Senior cabinet officials joined Sheinbaum at Mexico’s National Palace to outline the strategy, amid rising cartel violence targeting mayors, farmers, and civilians.
