Europe is enduring its worst wildfire season on record, with Spain at the heart of the crisis. Massive blazes have devastated the Ourense region, destroying at least 62,000 hectares across multiple towns and forcing emergency evacuations. The fires, which began in Oimbra and rapidly spread to Monterrei, Cualedro, Verín, and Laza, have been further compounded by another outbreak near Granxa parish, consuming an additional 11,000 hectares. Nationwide, more than 23 fires are burning, resulting in injuries among firefighters and several fatalities. With over 343,000 hectares already scorched, Spain faces an unprecedented environmental and humanitarian disaster.
