The United States is the only democracy in which even if the maximum number of people vote for a particular presidential candidate, they may still lose the elections. This has happened, at least 4 times – twice in the 1800s, and then twice in the recent past. For example, in 2016, Hillary Clinton actually got nearly 3 million votes more than Donald Trump but it was Trump who finally became the president.
