This decision, made after a thorough review, has sparked controversy due to the unit’s history of hateful ideology. Despite past bans on arms delivery, Ukrainian officials have prioritised lobbying efforts to lift restrictions on Azov. The unit, originally founded in 2014 as a volunteer battalion, has since evolved and grown in size, becoming part of Ukraine’s National Guard. However, concerns persist regarding its association with extremist elements, prompting scrutiny from international organisations and accusations of war crimes.
